Susan Dygert began her studies in fine art at Ohio State University,
Columbus, OH, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Social
and Behavioral Science. Since then, she has studied art at both
the University of Cincinnati and the Art Academy of Cincinnati while
working professionally as a graphic designer and exhibiting her
paintings in a number of solo and group exhibitions in Canada, Vermont,
New Hampshire, Ohio and Kentucky.
My art is inspired by spiritual and
psychological themes. By working spontaneously and intuitively,
inspired by dreams and other encounters with the unconscious, I
have found a way to unleash my inner life. I allow each work to
emerge and present its own identity, which I feel I must be true
to, celebrating the beautiful accidents along the way. In recent
years I have experimented with paper cutouts as a method of applying
paint and use it almost exclusively now. I work quickly, with bouts
of reflection and study, the end result hopefully being a marriage
of immediacy and thoughtfulness. I find myself more and more drawn
to a grid pattern, inspired by a series of profound dreams, and
very interested in the concept of healing. Fruit, egg, sperm and
leaf motifs are common in my work, used as symbols for creativity,
fertility, nourishment and renewal.
