About the Artist

Emmy Houweling, a New Castle, KY resident, is a self-taught painter. Her flattened landscapes are inspired by an 18th century Dutch itinerant folk artist, who cut out his drawings and pasted them on colored paper. Houweling's black backgrounds and sideways-laying houses and barns have become her signatures. She paints these building askew with a sense of humor, as if one was walking in the painting--in this world, the building would be oriented that way. Although she began working in oil, she prefers using acrylic, and frames her canvases in rustic, weathered barn wood.

Houweling, who is originally from Holland, has created things her entire life. She started painting more than 30 years ago. One can find her work in England, France, The Netherlands, Greece, on wine bottles in California, and at the Ann Tower Gallery in Lexington.

Artist's Statement

[My paintings are] seeing Kentucky through my eyes. There is never a day, not a season, when the scenery doesn't form paintings in my mind while driving through the countryside or the many small towns. They definitely cannot be called "Still Life"-people are working, there is action, they tell a story!
