I believe that the objects or events that
have "beauty" evoke in us feelings of pleasure. These
feelings of pleasure are based on our perception that the objects
or events exhibit a "truth" or an "order". We
call art, mathematics, and geometry beautiful based on this. What
I am going to call "Art", however, has an order that can
be perceived, but not apperceived. That is, we know that there is
a "truth" or "order" in a work but are unable
to define it, as we can with mathematics and geometry. It is this
lack of definition that maintains interest in "Art" over
time.
I aspire to create this "Art"
and evoke in people the emotions that I feel when discovering a
beautiful form or line. I hope my work communicates directly, like
music, on a visceral level, and not like literature which is intellectualized
through the abstraction of language and then translated into the
emotion. The music to which I liken my work, is "cool jazz"
that starts with a recognizable theme, then weaves interesting rhythmic
and tonal variations to create a new thing.
