Over the past forty years, Ed Lawrence has worked
in many different visual media, from painting in watercolor and
acrylic to small-scale sculpture, graphic and surface design, fiber
arts including paper construction, and of course -- photography.
The technology of digital photography has enabled him to pursue
the fine art of photography in similar ways that previous explorations
in Polaroid film and Instamatic cameras have provided; low learning
investment, high visual return. Ed
Lawrence currently directs communications for the Kentucky Arts
Council. In this capacity he writes, edits, designs and even sometimes
photographs for agency publications. He also coordinates media relations,
event promotions and public awareness campaigns.
I hope that I will always be
considered an emerging artist and a regional artist. Everyday is
a learning process and everyday I am inspired by the beauty of Kentucky’s
shaped and natural landscape. No matter what season, I find myself
awestruck and overwhelmed by the painterly nature of my surroundings
that translate into tiny windows of visual perfection. Earth, water
and sky are at the core of my work. Even my narrative work is within
the context of the landscape. Our deepest connection to the world
is when our feet touch the ground or hands ply the soil. Water reflects;
it tells us who we are. And the sky gives us the power to remember
what has been or dream of what could be.
I print in the small square
format to focus on the essential elements of line, color and form
and to give the viewer a sense of being there. I try to capture
those magic moments of light and timelessness that inform the transcendental
nature of my thought and reflect my sense of aesthetic. It is my
mission to share with all that view my work, the universal beauty
of this place that I call home.
