Valerie Shesko studied art history at SUNY Binghamton and received advanced degrees in art education from Southern Connecticut State University and in painting from the University of Cincinnati. She is also a former gallery director and Associate Editor of The Artist's Magazine, and has exhibited her award-winning work nationally and internationally. The artist resides in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Artist's Statement

I grew up in urban Brooklyn, New York and at age ten saw my first mountain; I was awestruck. Landscape continues its hold on me and remains my primary inspiration and motivation.

For two decades I have worked with landscape using a variety of media. I enjoy process and let the nature of the medium direct my work. I also find it refreshing to change my working methods and materials from time to time. Often I'll begin by making random marks. As I continue working, the color or shapes stimulate memories of specific places. The challenge then becomes making the memories more real, using them to express states of mind or feeling.
