Lexington artist Lina Tharsing recently
completed her BFA at the University of Kentucky where she received
numerous awards for her work. She has shown widely in the Lexington
area, most recently at Arts Place for the juried University Open
and at the UK Coldstream Research Facility. In spring 2007 Tharsing's
solo show, The Experiments, was housed at The Icehouse in Lexington.
Through my paintings, I explore the
relationship between diagrams from books and their textual information.
By separating diagrams and illustrative photographs from their original
contexts, I am able to give them new life. These diagramed people,
plants, bones, and apparatuses are then capable of speaking freely
to the viewer and acquiring new information. Parts of the new information
are visual clues that I have added; some information the viewer
creates when looking at each piece. Our vision often makes the world
seem more tangible than it really is and we forget how it is a complex
illusion, “a sheet dropped over the world’s true workings”
as Marilynne Robinson so cleverly wrote.
