The Ann Tower Gallery is pleased to present:
Figure & Space: New Paintings by Ulrike Hahn . The 21 paintings in this
exhibition were created in Berlin, Germany and Atlanta. This is Hahn's
first solo exhibition in the United States since 1999 when she lived in
Lexington and her work was shown at Ann Tower's previous gallery, where
it was received enthusiastically both by critics and the public. These
paintings are a continuation of a body of work that includes scenes, as
Hahn describes them, of "the vastness of a landscape, the ambiance of a
small town, the daily routine of the big city, the tranquility of a
rambling park, [and the] sublimity of a ballroom." Her expressionistically
rendered figures and landscapes speak to us, suggesting many stories.
Her dynamic palette, Hahn explains, "is based on subjective feelings
which must be kept in balance." Ultimately, Hahn's paintings "arrive
at the place where [she] attempts both to assert and to question identity."
Ulrike Hahn was born in Zwickau, Germany and began her studies in fashion
design at the Berlin School for Clothing and Design. In 1991, she
realigned her artistic focus to concentrate on painting and graphic
arts and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Berlin School of Art.
Hahn returned to Atlanta in April after spending the last three years in
Berlin completing a Master of Art in Context degree at the Berlin School
of Art. She will continue to divide her time between Berlin and Atlanta.
Her paintings and drawings have been displayed in galleries in Europe and
the US, and she has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Germany,
Spain, New York City, Lexington and Louisville. Her work is in many
public and private collections around the world, including Brown Forman
in Louisville, KY; W.H. Berghuis in Assen, Holland; and Outward Bound in
Schloss Kröchlendorf, Germany.
