Cartoonists Take Up Smoking will feature more than 60 original cartoons by nationally-known
editorial cartoonists, including 10 Pulitzer Prize winners, on the subject of tobacco.
The exhibition was curated by Dr. Alan Blum, Director of The University of Alabama Center
for the Study of Tobacco and Society. Over a thirty-five year period, Dr. Blum has amassed
more than 900 political cartoons from around the world on tobacco issues, along with the original
headlines that inspired the artists. This show is a fraction of his collection which includes
some of the most pungent political cartoons satirizing both the advocates and the opponents of
efforts to curtail tobacco use and promotion.
This exhibit will debut at the Ann Tower Gallery, Lexington, KY, as the first
city of an anticipated national touring exhibition, which will travel to the Cartoon
Art Museum in San Francisco and other cities. The show is in conjunction with the annual
convention of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, who are meeting in
Lexington for the first time in April. Pulitzer Prize winner Joel Pett, cartoonist
for the Lexington Herald-Leader, is hosting the convention and the exhibition. The
exhibition will include work by Garry Trudeau, Pat Oliphant, Ann Telnaes, Signe Wilkinson,
David Horsey, Mike Luckovich, Walt Handelsman, and a who’s who of other editorial
cartoonists from across the country.
